All aboard – behind the scenes on the Emerald Princess

A few weeks ago, before my Indonesian trip (more on that soon), I was invited on a tour of a cruise ship by Princess Cruises. This was quite exciting as a) it’s the only blog-related thing I’ve ever been invited to and b) I love boats and the sea generally (this site is named Saltwater due to my love of and living by the sea).

Cruising is not something I’d ever considered, except maybe one of those fjord cruises in Norway one day, when I’m older. Or maybe a river boat cruise in central Europe. So I was intrigued to see what a day on ship would be like. The highlight was definitely a behind the scenes tour of the galley where thousands of meals are created every day to be served in the ships’ restaurants.

Arriving at Southampton Cruise Terminal early one Saturday morning, we were welcomed on board the Emerald Princess with a welcome drink and small bite to eat. Then it was off on a whistle-stop tour of some of the ship’s attractions. From fine dining to an adults-only relaxation and spa outdoor area, kids’ zone and bars and entertainment for adults, there was a lot on offer.

Movies under the stars really caught my eye… free popcorn is even provided for the nightly screenings of latest releases and classic movies.

So would I consider taking a cruise? I’m still not sure it’s for me just yet, but the tour opened my eyes to everything you can do on board. Add that to the days ashore and you’d never be bored! (As more of a fan of slower travel, this is one thing that might put me off – I like more time to explore a place!)

Thanks to Princess Cruises UK for the kind invite.
