Italy is one of my favourite places and yet, until last week, I’d only been there twice. So another visit, this time to Sorrento on the Bay of Naples, was long overdue. Somehow being surrounded by orange and lemon groves, walking around in sandals in April, surrounded by the bluest of seas really gave me that carefree holiday feeling.
I’ll be sharing posts about the Amalfi Coast, Herculaneum and Pompeii and more soon, but I wanted to share some photos from my trip first of the spectacular views on offer around the craggy coastline.
Sometimes it’s worth paying a bit extra for a location – like the view from our hotel across the bay to Vesuvius. We stayed in a hilltop village called Sant’Agata, a few miles above Sorrento. As you can see, the weather was terrible the whole time ;)
If you’re looking for a 360 view over the bay of Naples, Capri and the start of the Amalfi coast, head up to the ‘Il Deserto’ monastery in Sant’Agata. It’s a little tricky to find and only open to the public for a couple of hours every morning and evening, but the views from the bell-tower are incredible.
Sorrento sits on the cliffs at the far southern tip of the bay of Naples and it’s a great jumping-off point for trips to the islands (Ischia and Capri), but you can also get a fast boat to Naples in just under 45 minutes for around 12 euros (single). We didn’t actually go to Capri as the price of the boat trip put us off.

If you’re in this area, you can’t miss a trip to the Amalfi Coast. It’ll be you and thousands of others, but don’t let that put you off. It’s probably the most spectacular coastline I’ve seen in my travels.

During my recent trip in Campania, I visited Mount Vesuvius. I sneaked myself up to the crater, bypassing the gate and avoiding the ticket fee (not for the money but for the adventure’s sake in its own right). I just published today on my blog the story of the first trespassing attempt, starting all the way from Pompei overnight, which was, after all, unsuccessful as I got busted by a military patrol.
